Florida Insurance for Canadians: A Short Story

Canada and Florida Are
Closer Than You Think
Florida Insurance for Canadians · March 2026
Canadians own homes, run businesses, or keep boats and cars in Florida.
Most don’t realize the risk that creates, or know someone who can help them navigate it.
It’s something I think about every day. Especially as someone who grew up in Hamilton, Ontario, and is moving to Boca Raton, Florida this year.
A Canadian Landing in Fort Lauderdale
It was Friday, March 6th, 2026. I woke up at 4 a.m. after four hours of sleep, bags under my eyes, headed to the airport for a flight to Fort Lauderdale. That alone gave me energy. The gate was packed. Families with suitcases, snowbirds heading for cruises, happy babies feeding off the stress their parents just let go of.
After a quick three-hour flight, I grabbed my luggage, stepped outside, and felt the first gust of warm Florida air. My shoulders dropped.
When Canada Finds You at The Florida Airport
Then something happened I couldn’t have planned.
Standing outside the terminal, I look to my right and there’s a friend of mine. Just flew in from Ottawa. Hadn’t seen him in two years. Turns out he’d stopped by our Boca office a month earlier while I was in Canada, looking for guidance on his Florida insurance. There he was in the pickup lane, managing a Zoom call, waiting on a ride and catching up with me all at once. We shared a few laughs and went our ways.
After the Friday traffic I grabbed lunch at Pollo Tropical, a Florida staple every Canadian needs to try, then made my way to the office.
A Canadian Farmer Calls About Florida Property Insurance
That’s when the day got stranger.
Thirty minutes after walking in, a call came in. A Canadian farmer from Millgrove, Ontario, with questions about Florida insurance. He found us online.
Millgrove, Ontario. That’s where my mother grew up. I’d never spoken to this man. But within minutes it felt like I’d known him for years. Then he mentioned a close friend, a big player in Ontario’s meat industry. His two kids are both my next-door neighbours. My house is literally sandwiched between theirs. We spent the rest of the call laughing at how small the world is.
None of it was staged. It was just a Friday in March. And it reminded me why I do this.
Florida Insurance, the Canadian Way
Canada and Florida are closer than the map suggests. The communities overlap. The people overlap. The needs overlap. When a Canadian calls about their Florida insurance, they deserve someone who gets it. That’s what we’re here for at Burke Bogart and Brownell.
